Book Review: “Mary Edwards Walker: America’s Only Female Medal of Honor Recipient” by Ammar Habib.

Ammar Habib first got my attention with The Heart of Aleppo, Therefore, he is not a newcomer to history-infused works. As an Army veteran, the title hooked me and made me ask why only one woman has received the Medal of Honor, a doctor at that. Moreover, it made me question why the government took away the Medal of Honor, earned in war, just because the recipient supported women’s suffrage (the actual real reason).

Mr. Habib’s book deals with the complicated answer, an answer steeped in the prejudice and discrimination of the time. It is also steeped in legalisms that justify the mistreatment of a valorous woman who, disregarding the perils, crossed enemy lines to treat wounded civilians and was taken and imprisoned as a prisoner of war. In short, Habib’s book highlights an injustice. That itself merits appreciation, over and above the fact that the book is written well.

Five well-deserved Stars!
